The avatar shows your current conversation and lets you control it.

For conversations with friends, avatars are their personal avatars or initials and, for topic conversations, they are the first 3 letters of topics’ names.

shows the chat conversation.

starts a call.

ends the conversation and clears the avatar.

The avatar closes automatically: tap to re-open. You can also drag it up or down to move it out of the way.
